Bridesmaids Luncheon??? What is it?

Q:

I was wondering what is a bridesmaids luncheon? Who hosts it? When should it happen and where? I have never heard anything about this and want to make sure I am not missing anything. Also I am so busy with everything else is it really necessary?

Thanks, Steph

A:

What?: Many brides have not heard of this wonderful tradition. You would host it for your bridesmaids and maid/matron of honor anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks before your wedding, however it is not required.

Who Hosts?: The bridesmaids' luncheon is hosted by the bride, to thank her maids. Attendees would include the bridesmaids, as well as any other close female friends or relatives participating in the wedding -- including the mothers of the bride and groom, sisters and favorite aunts.

Where?: Despite what the name implies, the luncheon does not have to be a luncheon. You may choose to do a dinner at a favorite restaurant, brunch in the your home, or a afternoon of pampering at the spa. The event can be either formal or elegant. The day before the wedding is another popular time to host the luncheon, especially if this is when your bridesmaids will be in town.

The luncheon provides an opportunity for the bride to give her attendants their thank you gifts. If your mother and future mother-in-law will be attending, you might want to give each of them a small gift for their support.

Charming Tradition: A tradition associated with the luncheon is the bridesmaids' cake. The cake is often pink and contains a coin, thimble or ring, baked inside. The cake is then cut and a slice distributed to each attendant. Whoever finds the trinket is thought to be "blessed in affairs of the heart" or possibly the next to wed. Another version of this tradition dates back from the Victorian era. It involves six different charms with ribbons attached. Each charm represents a certain kind of luck. Your baker simply bakes these fun little charms right into the cake. Before the cake is cut, each bridesmaid pulls one ribbon to expose what luck may come their way.

Here is a great website who offers these wonderful bridesmaid cake charms! http://www.lovesbridaljewelry.com/Catalog/Gift-Sets-and-Ideas/Item/1137/Wedding+Cake+Charms

Bottom line!: Have fun with it! Simply said... It should be a time where you let your attendants know how much you value their friendship, support and help. ENJOY!!!
